Reporter Volume 25, No.13 December 2, 1993 Men's Basketball Head Coach Tim Cohane got off to a winning start on Nov. 26 as his Bulls men's basketball team opened the 1993-94 season with a 70-61 victory over local NAIA opponent Daemen College. The Bulls never trailed as they took a 37-20 lead at halftime and never looked back. Junior Myron Banks led all scorers with 18 points and 10 rebounds. Banks was 9-of-18 from the floor. Junior Modie Cox scored 16 points from his guard position and pulled down seven rebounds. Freshman guard Rasaun Young, who led all New York State high schoolers in scoring last season at New Rochelle High School, came off the bench to hit for 15 points and a game-high 11 rebounds (seven on the offensive end). He also contributed three assists and three steals. UB came back the following evening to face Marist College, a member of the Northeast Conference. The Red Foxes handed UB its first loss of the year with an 87-80 decision. Early in the first half, the Bulls held as much as an 11 point lead but saw Marist chip away at the margin to tie the contest at 35 at halftime. The game remained a see-saw contest for much of the second half, until the Red Foxes held UB without a field goal for over six minutes as they went on a 13-6 run to put the game away. Marist went to the free throw line 45 times connecting on 32 while the Bulls were 15-of-22 from the charity stripe. The Bulls will be playing in the Canisius Tournament this weekend. Friday, they tip off at 6 p.m. in the Memorial Auditorium against Niagara. The second game will pit host Canisius and Gonzaga at 8 p.m. The consolation game will be played on Saturday at 6 pm with the championship game following at 8 pm. Women's Basketball The women's basketball team under Head Coach Sal Buscaglia completed their exhibition season with a 59-54 win over Queen's University of Kingston, Ontario and a 75-63 loss to the Upstate Developmental Basketball League. Senior center Molly Reville led the Royals with 14 points in the USDBL game. Sophomore center Kris Holtz added 13 points and led the Royals with 10 rebounds. Senior point guard Nadine Mastroleo added 12 points. UB's bench saw plenty of action as no one played more than 29 minutes in the contest. The Royals rebounded for their victory over Queen's by nailing some key free throws at the end of the contest. Senior forward Brooke Smith and Mastroleo each hit their one and one attempts with less than 30 seconds to go to preserve the win.. Four playersQSmith, Natosha Cummings, Brenna Doty, and Andrea FraleyQscored eight points to lead the balanced Royals' attack. Smith led with 10 rebounds and five steals. The Royals forced Queen's into 33 turnovers making 19 steals. The Royals host the Lockport Savings Bank Women's Basketball Tournament on Friday and Saturday. UB will face Eastern Michigan in the opening round at 8 pm preceded by Akron meeting Northeastern Illinois State at 6 p.m. The consolation game is Saturday at 1 pm with the championship following at 3 p.m.
