Reporter Volume 25, No.11 November 11, 1993 By PATRICIA DONOVAN News Bureau Staff Kerry Grant, dean of the UB Faculty of Arts and Letters, has announced the appointment of four members of the management staff of the new $50-million UB Fine Arts Center. They are Connie Campanaro marketing director; Sandra J. Fazekas, events coordinator; Gerard Kegler, managing technical director, and Mark Komdat, business manager. Embracing more than 250,000 square feet of space, the Fine Arts Center will serve as a production and presentation site for UB's fine arts departments and as a venue for regional and national theater, dance, art and media arts productions, exhibitions, conferences and other events. The center's public performance spaces, which will open officially in 1994, include a proscenium theater with seating for 1,800, a 400-seat drama theater, two art galleries, a 200-seat public screening room and an atrium with a reception capacity of 2,000 (standing) or 600 (seated). Connie Campanaro will manage the regional marketing and promotion of concerts, theater and dance productions, film screenings and exhibitions presented in the center. A communications graduate of UB, she is the former president and general manager of B-Sharp Promotions, Inc., a company known for its regional promotion of music and non-music events, sites and concerts. At B-Sharp, Campanaro was responsible for directing advertising programs, media buying, public relations, marketing, events planning, hands-on graphic design and copywriting and staff supervision for hundreds of popular performance events. She has worked with major presentation houses throughout WNY, including Shea's Buffalo Center, Kleinhans Music Hall, Impaxx Concert Theatre, Melody Fair, Rockwell Hall Center for the Performing Arts and the Tralfamadore Jazz Institute. She also has handled regional promotion and marketing for major performance artists and music groups. Sandra J. Fazekas, a magna cum laude graduate of the UB School of Architecture and Planning, is a long-time member of the UB professional staff, most recently serving as assistant to Robert J. Wagner, UB senior vice president for university services. In her position as events coordinator, she will be the primary liaison between the center staff and sponsors of all events, both on and off campus, and the local arts council and other groups. She will work with the program committee and marketing director to ensure the effective design and implementation of events scheduled at the center. In addition, she has responsibility for the development and maintenance of an events calendar for all facilities operated by the Faculty of Arts and Letters, including the Katharine Cornell Theater, the Pfeifer Theater, Fine Arts Center theaters and galleries and the concert facilities in Baird and Slee halls She will organize tours of the center, compile informational literature, recruit a volunteer force and work to improve patron accessibility to events, particularly with regard to signage, parking, building and event locations. As business manager, Mark Komdat will be responsible for day-to-day supervision of business operations, the financial operation of all center accounts and for office financial systems and control operations. He also will supervise the box office and, with the events coordinator, help match available space, personnel and equipment to user need. A UB staff member since 1984, Komdat had served since 1990 as the manager of facilities, operations, personnel, services and programs for the UB Student Union and for its associated not-for-profit auxiliary enterprises. He holds bachelor's and master's degrees in business from UB. As managing technical director, Gerard Kegler will be responsible for implementing operational policies for the Fine Arts Center and the Pfeifer and Cornell Theaters. He also will supervise the center's assistant facilities director and house manager, as well as the operating staff of the Pfeifer and Cornell Theaters; oversee the maintenance and installation of security systems for the Fine Arts Center, and help develop the center's security plan. He will have responsibilities in the area of building upkeep and for maintenance of the plant's mechanical equipment, and will oversee facility rehabilitation and remodeling. Kegler holds a bachelor's degree in theater and arts management and a master's degree in humanities with a concentration in theater and music technology, both from UB. He has worked in the UB Department of Theater and Dance since 1985 as associate technical director and director of performance facilities. The UB Fine Arts Center houses the departments of Media Study, Art, and Theater and Dance. Instructional facilities include two 50-seat screening rooms, two black-box theaters, two large dance studios, a television production studio, sound stage and recording studios, video synthesis and post-production rooms, mixing and editing rooms and a digital imaging/audio lab for advanced research in film and video technology. Also housed here are a metal casting foundry; photography and computer-design labs; printmaking studios; skylighted drawing and painting studios; lithography and etching studios; sculpture studios; costume and set construction shops; dressing rooms; prop, wardrobe, scene and paint shops; theater audio and electric shops; rooms for scenery and set storage; machine and assembly shops, and a finishing shop.
