Ensuring future of rain forest, communities
Each summer since 1991, students in UB’s School of Architecture and Planning have learned about sustainability first hand, living in and working on projects to benefit Monteverde, a small mountainous town adjacent to the Monteverde Cloud Forest Preserve in Costa Rica.
As part of the Sustainable Futures study abroad program hosted by the Monteverde Institute, they live for 10 weeks during the rainy season with families in a rain forest community struggling to achieve a balance between its agricultural base, the pressures of ecotourism, and the desire to save the rain forests.
Coursework includes a seminar on sustainable development and an intensive studio/internship with a local organization working toward sustainability. Projects completed have included design of an educational institute, a library addition and a series of scenario planning projects with wide community involvement.
In addition to the UB School of Architecture and Planning, Sustainable Futures is sponsored by the University of Maryland and Syracuse University landscape architecture programs and the Urban and Regional Planning Program of the University of Illinois. UB co-coordinators are architecture professors Dennis A. Andrejko and Lynda H. Schneekloth.
