This proposal describes a new center focusing on key current and emerging issues in the research and practice of organizational leadership and innovation with the dual objectives of research excellence and high research impact.
In addition to bringing international attention to UB for its research quality and productivity, the center will play a pivotal function in supporting UB’s role as an anchor institution for economic engagement in a region undergoing critical growth and transformation. The new center will produce top-quality research in organizational leadership and innovation, help the School of Management (SOM) attract and retain the most accomplished and promising researchers in the field, foster research-practice collaborations with dynamic industries in Buffalo/WNY, and provide educational programs and opportunities for students at the undergraduate, masters, and doctoral levels. It will be the first center so positioned anywhere in the SUNY system, or at any other university in the region, and even among leadership centers at elite research universities, will be uniquely positioned by focusing on translational research impacting practice and producing unique leading-edge research on leadership and organizational effectiveness through research-organization collaborations. Led by SOM, the vision for the proposed center is nonetheless fully collaborative: The center will pursue and promote synergistic collaboration on leadership and innovation issues across schools at UB (especially with the health sciences schools). The center will directly contribute to UB’s ranking and reputation by building a world-class faculty of leadership and innovation scholars publishing in top-tier journals. This research expertise will have added impact through applied research that benefits organizational effectiveness, particularly by forging partnerships and involving faculty and students with entities that are intimately engaged in the economic revitalization of WNY.
