Strengthening the Center for Entrepreneurial Leadership

The Center for Entrepreneurial Leadership is a vital link connecting the university to the culture of entrepreneurial ambition in Western New York.

The Center fosters communication, collaboration and cooperation between School of Management professors, UB researchers, regional businesses, community leaders, employees and students.  The CEL stimulates the creation of new ventures, accelerates business growth and prospers sustainable economic opportunities in the surrounding community.

This proposal will extend the role of the CEL at UB as a partner with internal UB units involved in entrepreneurship and with regional business and industry requiring entrepreneurial strategies to survive and thrive in these difficult economic times.  This will involve at least the following efforts:

  • Improve the High-Tech CEL Program:  The CEL partners with the New York State Center of Excellence in Bioinformatics and Life Sciences to provide entrepreneurial and industry specific guest speakers, workshops and classes for some of the regions brightest technology prospects.  Investing additional staff resources to build out the quality of this program is critical given the emerging life sciences activity in WNY and the focus of the university on the medical campus.
  • Grow the Panasci Technology Competition:    The Panasci Technology Entrepreneurship is a joint venture between the University at Buffalo School of Management and the UB Office of Science, Technology Transfer and Economic Outreach.  The goal is to grow the competition into a high profile event for the university that engages students, faculty, researchers, businesses and the surrounding community.  This has been done successfully at other universities (Rice, Babson, Syracuse, etc.) and is an excellent event to increase engagement across multiple disciplines and stakeholders.
  • Build the Consulting Practice Within the Center:  We are currently turning away numerous opportunities for increased revenue and engagement available through consulting opportunities.  This program provides the resources to coordinate a staff of consultants and begin to capture additional revenue that would increase our engagement with Center companies as we are able to provide resources for them throughout their entire business lifecycle.
  • Engage With Other UB Units Involved in Entrepreneurship:  The enhanced capacity would allow CEL (and SOM) to respond better to calls from within UB where help is required with such key managerial skills as financial planning, growth of revenue generating initiatives, and partnerships for growth.
