Dear University Community:

I am pleased to announce the appointment of Professor Despina Stratigakos as Interim Vice Provost for Inclusive Excellence, effective February 5, 2018.  Professor Stratigakos succeeds Professor Teresa Miller who recently joined SUNY as Vice Chancellor for Strategic Initiatives and Chief of Staff to Chancellor Kristina Johnson.

Professor Stratigakos, an architectural historian and professor in the School of Architecture and Planning, is an internationally recognized and prolific scholar on issues of diversity in architecture.  Her books explore the intersections of power and architecture.  Where Are the Women Architects? (2016) confronts the challenges women face in the architectural profession. The widely acclaimed Hitler at Home (2015) investigates how Nazi designers and publicists reinvented the dictator through his domestic spaces, polishing his image in Germany and abroad. A Women’s Berlin: Building the Modern City (2008), which traces the history of a forgotten female metropolis, won the German Studies Association DAAD Book Prize and the Milka Bliznakov Research Prize from the International Archive of Women in Architecture.  Professor Stratigakos is the recipient of many prestigious fellowships and awards including membership at the Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton and the Marie Curie Fellowship from the Gerda Henkel Foundation and Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich.

Professor Stratigakos’ administrative experience includes serving as Interim Chair of the Department of Architecture and Deputy Director of the Institute for Research and Education on Women and Gender. Professor Stratigakos was a founding member of the Architecture and Design Academy, an initiative of the Buffalo Public Schools to encourage students from diverse socio-economic backgrounds to pursue degrees in architecture.

I am most grateful to Professor Stratigakos for her willingness to assume this interim senior leadership role so that we can continue to build on the momentum established under Vice Provost Miller.  In the coming weeks, I will launch a search and expect to have the next Vice Provost in place by July 1, 2018.

Sincerely,

Charles F. Zukoski
Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs
