In his fourth annual community address, President John B. Simpson called on New York State to create and fund a coherent higher education policy and the Western New York community to continue its financial, political and moral support for UB and its strategic plan, UB 2020. Noting that UB and the region are at a crossroads, he called UB 2020 the path to a bright future for the region and the road to choose over “the path of doing business as usual.”
27:39Western New York’s delegation in the State Legislature is introducing legislation that will help UB achieve the goals of its strategic plan and more than double its annual economic impact on New York State and the region. The proposed bill was announced to an enthusiastic crowd of more than 200 UB supporters on Jan. 16, 2009 at a rally in the UB Downtown Gateway.
43:56We can’t build a great public research university for the 21st century on an outdated, 1950s-style bureaucracy designed to enforce rules no one needs any more. UB is being starved for resources and strangled by over-regulation.
28:28This year we are entering a critical phase for UB 2020. Over the past year, we have generated considerable momentum, and have built a broad coalition of “UB Believers” who are committed to advocating for UB’s vision of excellence. Now it’s time to take these efforts to the next level.
4:29/span>UB announced a $10 million gift from Jeremy M. Jacobs, his wife, Margaret, and family to establish the Jacobs Institute, which will support research and clinical collaboration on the causes, treatment and prevention of heart and vascular diseases and funding the retention and recruitment of world-class researchers, educators and clinicians to the UB and to the Western New York heath-care community.

A coalition of business and community leaders has formed a new initiative -- UB Believers -- dedicated to strengthening the Western New York economy today and for future generations through growing the University at Buffalo by 40 percent between now and the year 2020. The broad-based advocacy group with a shared belief that a strong UB will translate into financial, quality-of-life rewards for the region.
26:30This semester, our campus is looking back at UB’s legacy of energy conservation and environmental stewardship. To note this achievement we have launched “A Greener Shade of Blue,” a program that includes lectures by several notable speakers, capped by an April address by Vice President Al Gore. This gets to the very core of who we are as an academic community. That’s because UB is the public university for a borderless world.
