Significant progress made toward expansion of UB's senior leadership team September 1, 2005

Dear Colleagues:

This is an exciting time of progress, growth, and change as our university community continues the collaborative process of institutional planning for our future as a premier public research university of the 21st century. I want to take this opportunity to update you on current administrative search efforts underway to identify three individuals who will join UB's senior leadership team in helping to guide this institutional growth and development over the coming years.

With the arrival of Vice President for External Affairs Marsha Henderson and Vice President for Health Sciences David Dunn this fall, UB is moving forward quickly with the key administrative searches in their respective areas that had been pending their arrival. Vice President Henderson will chair the search committee to fill the position of Vice President for Development and Alumni Relations within the External Affairs division. Vice President Dunn, who oversees UB's five health sciences schools, has announced the formation of a search committee to identify the next Dean of the School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences. That committee will be chaired by Dr. Maurizio Trevisan, Dean of the School of Public Health and Health Professions.

A third search will commence within the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences to identify a candidate to succeed outgoing Dean Mark Karwan, who earlier this semester announced his plans to return to his faculty role as researcher and teacher. Dr. Alexander Cartwright, Professor of Electrical Engineering, will chair that committee.

All three of these search committees will meet for the first time next week, when they will be formally charged with their duties.

In the meantime, my thanks to the members of all three search committees for their efforts and contributions as they undertake this important and demanding work.

Sincerely, signature
John B. Simpson
President
