Naughton recognized for service

John P. Naughton, MD, professor of medicine, physiology, social and preventive medicine, and rehabilitation medicine, was honored at this year's Faculty Staff Recognition Awards Ceremony for his service as interim chair of the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine since 2003. Naughton, who is retiring this year, served as dean of the School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences from 1975 to 1997. He is a nationally recognized leader in exercise physiology, exercise testing and rehabilitation for myocardial infarction patients.

UBMD promotes wellness on campus

UBMD at Wellness Awareness Day

Twelve UBMD practice plan specialties participated in this year's UB Wellness Day in March, the annual vendor fair held to promote healthful lifestyles and preventive medicine to UB faculty and staff: UBMD Family Medicine; Pathology/Kaleida Labs; Nuclear Medicine; Rehabilitation Medicine; Orthopaedics; Neurology; Internal Medicine; Pediatrics; Gynecology-Obstetrics; Surgery; Psychiatry; and Neurosurgery. More than 100 people had blood drawn before the event, where Family Medicine was on hand to give physician consults and lab results. Six practices also opted to be listed in UBMD's group brochure, which advertises each practice plan under a consolidated design and brand. Askari named laparoscopic fellow

The Department of Gynecology-Obstetrics is proud to announce that Reza Askari, MD, will be the new 2009-10 laparoscopic fellow and will be training with program director Ali Ghomi. Askari has worked for the department for the past year in preparation for his fellowship, after completing his residency at the Lincoln Medical and Mental Health Center (an affiliate of Cornell University). Askari and Ghomi will work out of Buffalo General Hospital. The one-year Advanced Gynecologic Laparoscopic Surgery Fellowship will give Askari extensive laparoscopic surgery training under Ghomi and other faculty members.

Endoscopic ultrasound now at ECMC

Shahid Mehboob, assistant professor of clinical medicine and a staff gastroenterologist at the VA Medical Center, is now providing endoscopic ultrasound to the Buffalo community at Erie County Medical Center. The outpatient procedure provides high-quality ultrasound images and information about the digestive tract and the surrounding tissue and organs, resulting in detailed, cost-effective non-surgical assessments of certain diseases. Mehboob recently was nominated chief of the VA's GI section; he performs advanced endoscopic procedures (retrograde cholangiopancreatography, ultrasound and mucosal resection). UBMD Sleep Medicine Center opens

UBMD Sleep Medicine has opened a new sleep center at 6105 Transit Road in East Amherst, enhancing an existing collaboration between UBMD, the Sleep and Wellness Centers of Western New York and Associated Healthcare. The new center is accredited by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine and provides centralized, modern facilities for sleep testing, office visits, and sleep therapy. UBMD physicians Eric Ten Brock, MD, and Alan Aquilina, MD, are certified in sleep medicine by the American Board of Internal Medicine. To refer patients, call 348-3435.

New faculty

UB Family Medicine announces the addition of Debra L. Luczkiewicz, MD, a recent graduate of the UB Family Medicine Residency Program. Luczkiewicz is seeing patients at UB Family Medicine of Amherst; she also will provide palliative and support care to hospice patients at the Hospice Buffalo House at Mitchell Campus in Cheektowaga.

UBMD Gynecology-Obstetrics introduces four new faculty members. Dennis D. Mauricio, MD, and Lata Santhakumar, MD, have joined the Summer Street clinic after completing their UB residencies. Majid Shaman, MD, and Faye Justicia-Linde, MD, will join them in the generalist division this fall (practice locations forthcoming).

New neurosurgery location opens

UB Neurosurgery opens new Amherst location

UB Neurosurgery began seeing patients on August 3 at its new brain and spine evaluation center at 3980A Sheridan Drive in Amherst. Clinical services offered at the center include evaluation and diagnosis of such complex spine and brain disorders as aneurysms, tumors, strokes, epilepsy, and Parkinson's disease. The center provides access to in-house chiropractic and pain specialists and nearby diagnostic imaging facilities. UB Neurosurgery physicians already provide 24-hour treatment for acute stroke as part of the Kaleida Stroke Team. UB Neurosurgery serves approximately 9,300 patients a year and will continue to offer services at Millard Fillmore Gates Circle and Suburban hospitals, Buffalo General Hospital, and Women and Children's Hospital of Buffalo, as well as at its suburban offices in Olean, Fredonia, and Orchard Park.
