Behind the scenes

What’s happening with UBMD committees

The UBMD Management Council employs a committee structure for both expertise and implementation of UBMD business. The committee structure and operational rules are specified in the proposed UBMD bylaws; all committees report to the management council. The full list of committees is a map of UBMD as an enterprise.

Membership on committees is open to any member of UBMD; each committee includes a member of the management council. The UBMD committee structure is intended to widen participation in the business of the larger corporate body in order to tap the strengths and abilities of the members outside the management council. It also distributes the workload of what is a very complex enterprise and provides opportunities for UBMD members to take on leadership responsibilities as committee chairs.

Five committees have been seated and have done significant work. The executive committee, chaired by the president of the management council with a membership specified in the bylaws, is responsible for managing UBMD’s day-to-day issues on behalf of the management council. The finance committee (Steven Dubovsky, chair) is currently preparing a UBMD business plan and studying ways to finance various start-up costs. The bylaws committee (Steven Dubovsky, chair) wrote the bylaws. The IT committee (Peter Winkelstein and Chester Fox, co-chairs), which has been working for several years under various corporate authorities, has oversight of all the components of UBMD’s information technology systems. And the contracting committee (Teresa Quattrin, chair) will handle negotiations between UBMD and hospitals and third-party payors.

The other committees not yet fully seated are marketing, compliance, credentialing, quality improvement, dispute resolution, human resources/benefits, space/facilities, nominations, and advisory.
