WHO declares birth defects linked to Zika virus a public health emergency

An article in USA Today about the World Health Organization’s declaration of a “public health emergency of international concern” because of the rise in birth defects linked to the Zika virus outbreak interviews Thomas Russo, professor of medicine and chief of the Division of Infectious Diseases in the Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences. After weathering criticism for a slow response to the Ebola outbreak, WHO felt pressure to act decisively on Zika, he said. “They’re trying to get ahead of it.” The article also appeared on television stations around the country, including WFAA-TV in Dallas-Fort Worth, WTSP-TV in Tampa and KARE-TV in Minneapolis.
