An article on Yahoo News about how social media and a lack of public faith in criminal justice have shaped the “true crime” genre into its modern form quotes David Schmid, professor of English and an expert on crime in U.S. popular culture, who pointed to the O.J. Simpson trial as a flashpoint for the change. “The line that was crossed with that case was that it gave the general public a level familiarity with the legal process that they didn’t possess before,” he said.
