Using phonics makes learning to read easier, says study

An article in TIME Magazine reports on research by Chris McNorgan, assistant professor of psychology, that used neuroimaging technology to suggest that phonological information is vital to helping an individual identify words while they’re reading. “Better readers seem to have more of these neurons taking advantage of auditory information to help the visual word recognition system along,” he said. Articles about his research also appeared in news outlets that include Business Standard, Austin American Statesman, Medical News and Science Daily.
