The University at Buffalo will celebrate Winterfest 2010 this weekend (Friday and Saturday, Feb. 19 and 20) at South Lake Village on the North Campus with a variety of activities aimed at warming up those wintertime blues.

A wintertime tradition at UB for more than 50 years, Winterfest '10 will feature both indoor and outdoor events for UB students, including igloo- and snowman-making contests, human dogsled races and ice skating.

Igloo- and snowman-making contests will be ongoing Friday and Saturday, with students' wintry creations being judged at 3:30 p.m. Saturday; contest winners will receive trophies at 4:50 p.m. In addition, the Getzville Fire Department will hold an ice rescue demonstration at 1 p.m. Saturday.

Other outdoor events on the schedule include broomball, UB-style curling, snowshoeing and horse-drawn sleigh/wagon rides.

For those who are less enthusiastic about playing in the snow, there will be board games, music, food and door prizes in the South Lake Community Building. Events will conclude at 5 p.m. Saturday.

Winterfest '10 is presented by UB's Division of Student Affairs, Division of Athletics, University Facilities, Undergraduate Student Association, Department of Biological Sciences and the Getzville Fire Department.
