"Strengthening Education" To Be Focus of Keynote Address

BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Arthur E. Levine, president of the Woodrow Wilson Fellowship Foundation, will be the keynote speaker at a research symposium to be held by the UB Graduate School of Education on April 10 in the Buffalo/Niagara Marriott, 1340 Millersport Hwy., Amherst.

His lecture at 1 p.m. lecture will be titled, "Strengthening Education: Connecting Students, Policy, and Educators." The event will be free and open to the public.

Levine, who received his doctorate from UB, has been a pioneer for equity and equality within K-12 and higher education and an advocate for opportunity and growth within the field of education. His work focuses on equity in K-12 education and higher education, education reform and education policy.

He has served as president of Teachers College, Columbia University, as well as president of Bradford University. His most recent scholarship, a four-year study of America's education schools, has resulted in three major reports, "Educating Leaders," "Educating Teachers" and "Educating Researchers."

He is the author or co-author of "When Hope and Fear Collide: A Portrait of Today's College Student," "Beating the Odds: How the Poor Get to College," "Higher Learning in America; Shaping Higher Education's Future," When Dreams and Heroes Died: A Portrait of Today's College Students," "Handbook on Undergraduate Curriculum; Quest for Common Learning" and Why Innovation Fails.

In 1997, Levine received a Distinguished Alumni Award from the UB Alumni Association.
