UB's TCIE Helps Local Firms and Organizations Obtain Safety Training Grants

BUFFALO, N.Y. -- The Center for Industrial Effectiveness (TCIE) in the University at Buffalo's Office of Science, Technology Transfer and Economic Outreach has assisted three local firms and one municipality in receiving a total of $46,000 in training grants from the New York State Department of Labor.

TCIE is now the largest recipient of New York State training grants for private companies and governmental agencies, providing grant administration and training support services to numerous organizations looking to improve working conditions and/or provide additional training to company employees.

The recent grants were awarded through the New York State Department of Labor to Upstate Farms, Sonwil Distribution Center, the Village of Hamburg and L.D. McCauley.

* For Upstate Farms in Cheektowaga, TCIE secured and administered a $19,800 grant and helped provide training programs to 20 senior managers and 500 workers at plants across upstate New York, covering coaching and observable safety techniques, safety trends, barriers to safety and the importance of systems thinking.

* For Sonwil Distribution Center of Buffalo, TCIE provided grant application and administrative services for seminars on fork lift, back safety, fire extinguisher and hazardous waste communications to more than 150 employees at the local state-of-the-art storage facility through a $7,605 grant.

* More than $10,222 was secured and administered by TCIE for a Village of Hamburg health and safety training program. Administered to 23 employees of the Village Sanitation Department, this course covered vehicle safety, confined space, hearing conservation, lifting safety and trenching and shoring.

* At automotive parts manufacturer, L.D. McCauley of Orchard Park, similar topics were covered including respiratory protection and authorized lockout training, with an $8,557 grant TCIE secured and administered.
