BUFFALO, N.Y. -- An alumnus of the University at Buffalo School of Management and his wife have committed $50,000 to the school's Department of Accounting and Law in recognition of the opportunities provided him and other students in pursuit of careers in accounting.

The gift from Gerard T. Mazurkiewicz and his wife, Barbara, of West Seneca includes a $25,000 matching gift from his firm, KPMG Peat Marwick LLP. Mazurkiewicz, a 1969 graduate of the management school's accounting program, is a partner in charge of the Buffalo firm's Upstate New York tax practice.

"The gift recognizes the opportunities for success the school and its faculty so ably provide students," said Mazurkiewicz. "It recognizes the positive impact the school has had on the accounting profession in Western New York and other parts of the country."

In accepting the gift, Professor Victor Pastena, chair of the management school's Department of Accounting and Law, cited Mazurkiewicz's leadership as past chair of the department's advisory board and his role in helping to shape and direct the school's accounting curriculum.

"We are very grateful for the generosity of Mr. Mazurkiewicz and KPMG Peat Marwick," said Pastena. "Mr. Mazurkiewicz's support will help ensure that our accounting program continues to be a valuable resource for the accounting profession."

According to Pastena, the gift will be used to enhance educational opportunities for UB accounting students.

The school's accounting program is one of 130 programs nationwide, and the only one in Western New York, to be accredited by the American Assembly of Collegiate Schools of Business.
