UB Dental School Honors Outstanding Students

BUFFALO, N.Y. -- The University at Buffalo School of Dental Medicine recently honored 38 graduating students at its 1997 commencement ceremony.

Two students won four or more awards. They were:

- Yossi Bar-Zion of Thousand Oaks, Calif. -- Alpha Omega Fraternity Award, American Academy of Orofacial Pain Award, Barrett Foundation Award, Edwin C. Jauch Award, Omicron Kappa Upsilon Award and Research Award, Oral Surgery Award and the Quintessence Award for research achievement

- Jennifer Kapela of Snyder -- American Academy of Esthetic Dentistry Award, American Association of Endodontists Award, Victor A. Fumia Award and second place in the fixed prosthesis division of the George B. Snow Award

Six students won three awards. They were:

- Julia Cianciola-Beach of Rochester -- American Academy of Periodontology Award, second place for the Victor A. Fumia Award and the Dr. Samuel A. Caccamise Award

- David Miraglia of Rochester -- American Association of Public Health Dentistry Award, first place in the fixed prosthesis division of the George B. Snow Award and the Omicron Kappa Upsilon Award

- Bret Gelder of Phelps -- Omicron Kappa Upsilon Award, Removable Prosthodontics Award and the Stephen B. Totten Memorial Award

Ten students won two awards. They were:

- Darren Loew of Vestal -- American Society of Dentistry for Children Award and the Richard A. Powell Award

- Michele Algieri of Shirley -- Delta Sigma Delta Award and the Harvey D. Sprowl Award

- Alfonse Gambacorta of Buffalo -- Fonzi Dental Club, Anthony S. Gugino Humanitarian Award and first place in the complete prosthesis division of the George B. Snow Award

- Colin Morton of West Sand Lake -- National Society of Dental Practitioners Award and second place in the complete prosthesis division of the George B. Snow Award

- Kaliopi Tsimidis of Willowdale, Ont. -- American Academy of Oral Medicine Award

- Edwin Jauch III of Williamsville -- Robert B. Levine Award

- Jeffrey Kopman of Dix Hills -- Lester Schatz Memorial Award
