The University at Buffalo and Buffalo Common Council Member Bonnie E. Russell powered up 10 computer terminals at New Testament Revival Cathedral on Buffalo's East Side today as part of a joint effort to provide much-needed computing resources for families in the neighborhood.

In an effort to stem the migration in recent years of many young, talented professionals from Western New York, the Prentice Family Foundation has given a significant gift to help UB students graduate and establish their careers here in the eight-county region.

"Boca Sana Cuerpo Sano" said the flyer posted in the Judge J. Mattina Community Health Center on Buffalo's largely Hispanic Lower West Side: "Healthy Mouth Healthy Body." It alerted the community to the upcoming free oral cancer screening at the clinic, carried out by faculty, dental residents and students from the School of Dental Medicine at the University at Buffalo.

Researchers in the University at Buffalo School of Architecture and Planning will partner with colleagues at Carnegie Mellon University on a $4.7 million, five-year effort to advance public transportation for people with disabilities.

Cobham's Carleton Technologies has made a four-year commitment to fund the University at Buffalo School of Engineering and Applied Sciences with a gift totaling $156,000 to support student scholarships, numerous programs and events, as well as a named classroom in the new engineering building to be constructed on UB's North (Amherst) Campus.

Bird Technologies Group has given $200,000 to the University at Buffalo School of Engineering and Applied Sciences to advance research and education in UB's RF/microwave systems program.

H. William Lichtenberger has made a $1 million gift to the University at Buffalo School of Management to establish an endowed professorship. The H. William Lichtenberger Professor of Global Services and Supply Management was created to help the UB School of Management attract and retain top talent and build its Global Services and Supply Management program.

Taking children to the dentist is important to their overall health, but for many families in Western New York, dental care is an unaffordable luxury. From Oct. 6-11, however, seeing a dentist will be free or cost little, thanks to 35 dentists in communities throughout Western New Work and at the University at Buffalo School of Dental Medicine.

John R. "Jack" Davis, a well-known Western New York industrialist who graduated from the University at Buffalo with a degree in engineering, has given $1.5 million to the UB School of Engineering and Applied Sciences in support of a new high-tech, flagship engineering building to be constructed on UB's North (Amherst) Campus.

WBFO 88.7 FM, the University at Buffalo's National Public Radio affiliate, won seven awards -- including three first-place honors -- at the New York State Associated Press Broadcasters Association's annual awards banquet held recently in Saratoga Springs.
