UB Wins Local Construction Awards for Davis Hall and Greiner Hall

Greiner, a sophomore residence hall on North Campus, wins the "green" prize

Release Date: May 16, 2012

BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Two new University at Buffalo buildings took home top honors in Buffalo Business First's annual "Brick by Brick" awards, announced on May 10, 2012.

UB's William R. Greiner Residence Hall, a sophomore dormitory on North Campus, received the "Best New Green Construction Award."

Greiner Hall, which opened last August, features a number of environmentally-friendly features. Among them: counters and floors made from recycled materials, high-efficiency lighting, low-flow shower heads and faucets, and detention ponds that prevent rainwater trickling from the roof from entering the sewer system.

The "Best Educational Project" award went to Barbara and Jack Davis Hall, which UB dedicated on May 10. The 130,000-square-foot engineering building includes environmentally-friendly features and will house two departments from the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences and various research centers.

The new buildings are part of the UB 2020 plan, which aims to transform UB into one of the nation's premier public research universities, enhancing learning and research facilities for students, faculty, staff and the community.

As a major public research institution, UB's model of sustainability focuses on finding solutions to global challenges through research, educating individuals about these challenges, setting the bar high for sustainability in our own operations and partnering with the external community to create a better future through sustainability.
