As Rust Belt cities transform vacant lots into green space for growing vegetables, University at Buffalo researchers are using modeling to help assess the City of Buffalo's capacity for sustainable agriculture.

The University at Buffalo will honor M&T Bank as a vital partner at this year's UB Partners Day, a day of workshops and networking opportunities showcasing how UB has partnered with industry, government and nonprofits to spur economic growth in Buffalo Niagara.

For some college students, spring break means major partying in Punta Cana or the Alps, but 41 University at Buffalo students will spend their March 12-20 break cleaning up parks, feeding the hungry, aiding the elderly, restoring damaged buildings, building homes and assisting with neighborhood projects.

Forget town versus gown: students at the University at Buffalo are not only interested in the community outside of UB, but through the university's innovative living/learning program called the Undergraduate Academies, more of them are now connecting with it.

The University at Buffalo Division of Athletics will donate more than $30,000 worth of athletic equipment to three local community centers at an event to be held at 4 p.m. Monday, Jan. 24, at the Ed Saunders Center, 2777 Bailey Ave.

A successful collaborative effort between the University at Buffalo, the New York State Historic Preservation Office (NYSHPO) and the City of Buffalo is expected to result in the establishment of the first National Register Historic District in the City of Buffalo since 1986: the University Park Historic District.

The holidays will be a little warmer and brighter for a number of local families in need thanks to the University at Buffalo's Adopt a Family program.

For the seventh year in a row, more than 200 residents of Buffalo's Lower West Side neighborhood will receive dental care from UB School of Dental Medicine faculty and dental-student volunteers over the course of two days at the Judge Joseph S. Mattina Community Health Center, 300 Niagara St. in Buffalo. UB faculty and students will attend to patients from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. today and tomorrow (Nov. 15 and 16).

An initiative to educate residents in the neighborhood around the University at Buffalo South Campus about the benefits of recycling is paying off, thanks to the efforts of UB's Off Campus Student Services, UB Green and the UB Honors College.

The New York Upstate Chapter of the American Planning Association has awarded Robert G. Shibley, the next dean of the University at Buffalo School of Architecture and Planning, the Michael J. Krasner Professional Planner Award.
