The University at Buffalo and the Hauptman-Woodward Medical Research Institute (HWI) have long been partners in basic scientific research. HWI is an independent, not-for-profit, biomedical research facility. In 2001, the University at Buffalo and the Hauptman-Woodward Medical Research Institute, Inc. (HWI) agreed to establish a UB Department of Structural Biology in the Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences based at HWI. Structural biology is the science of determining the 3-dimensional architecture of biomolecules. The UB Department of Structural Biology conducts research and trains doctoral-level students.
