As a cosmologist, Will Kinney explores the origins of the universe and how the universe is changing. His research focuses on cosmological inflation, dark matter and dark energy. Among other areas of interest, his work has explored the relationship between theories of cosmological origins and proposed "swampland conjectures" for string theory.

Kinney is the author of a popular-level book on the early universe, "An Infinity of Worlds: Cosmic Inflation and the Beginning of the Universe," with a 2022 release date.

Kinney can speak to media about the latest research in his field, as well as topics in physics and astronomy such as telescopes, the Big Bang, gravitational waves, black holes, supernovas, stars, the formation of planets and eclipses.

He is a co-founder of Buffalo's Science & Art Cabaret, which brings scientists and artists together several times a year to discuss topics from magic to black holes. The series, which is free and open to the public, has hosted over 30 events since its opening in 2009.
