Portrait of Nichol Castro, University at Buffalo speech, word retrieval and anomia expert.

Nichol Castro’s research focuses on word retrieval in aging adults, and in adults with language impairments. Word-finding difficulties, or anomia, is a common occurrence in aging, a pervasive symptom of aphasia, and an early feature of Alzheimer's disease and other dementias.

Castro’s areas of interest include studying how words are organized in memory. Her team uses behavioral studies and computational modeling to investigate various research questions. One motivation of her work is to identify a smarter body of word stimuli to use in diagnosis and treatment of language impairments.
