Portrait of Edward Steinfeld, University at Buffalo inclusive design and accessible buildings expert.

Edward Steinfeld is an expert on universal design and accessibility. He can speak to the media about topics that range from inclusive buildings and restrooms to accessible transit and infrastructure.

He has been a trailblazer in the field of inclusive design since the 1970s, when he led a transformational research project that established an evidence base for accessibility standards. In 1984, he founded the Center for Inclusive Design and Environmental Access (IDEA Center). Over the years, the center’s scope of work has expanded beyond architecture to encompass community planning, product design and service design.

Many of Steinfeld’s publications are considered key references in the fields of accessible and universal design. His work has included development of a certification system for universal design (isUDTM), and design of inclusive buildings, automated vehicles, wayfinding systems and more. He has served as a consultant to federal and state agencies, building owners and attorneys.

Steinfeld believes that architecture should, first and foremost, benefit the people who use buildings, and make a positive contribution to the community. His research focuses on empowering all people with enabling, healthy and sociable environments, including buildings, transportation and community infrastructure.
