Director of the UB Center for Hearing and Deafness, he is a leader in the field of hearing research. Has conducted research on the regeneration of sensory cells in the inner ear of birds and the generation of intense sounds that can disrupt hearing in the inner ear of chinchillas. Work has found that partial protection against hearing loss is provided by a type of calcium-channel blocker and that certain areas of the brain, including emotional centers, are "switched on" when people experience tinnitus, or ringing in the ear. Can discuss noise and hearing, the psychology of hearing, the development of the auditory system, the physiology of the inner ear, cochlear implants and tinnitus. |
