Srihari and UB co-researchers are developing a a new search engine designed to detect "hidden" information that can be gleaned from public Web sites. The Federal Aviation Administration has funded development of the system as part of an effort to anticipate -- and thwart -- the plans of potential terrorists.
A research scientist at UB's Center of Excellence for Document Analysis and Recognition (CEDAR) Srihari is co-developer of "Show & Tell," a new image-understanding software system that catalogs, annotates, stores and retrieves images based on its "world-knowledge" and verbal instructions from a human user. It is the first computer system to combine image processing, natural-language processing, speech recognition and spatial reasoning for the purpose of storing and retreiving images from a database
