Nielsen is the first woman to be president of the medical and dental staff at Buffalo General Hospital and was the first woman president of the Erie County Medical Society. She is chief medical officer for the Western New York office of the New York State Department of Health. A specialist in infectious diseases, she is a member of UB's AIDS Advisory Council and in 1996 was recipient of the Samuel P. Capen Distinguished Alumni Award. She also has served on the SUNY Board of Trustees. A frequent lecturer on health, nutrition and infectious diseases.
