Machiko R. Tomita is a gerontologist whose research aims to improve the functional ability and quality of life for older adults and their caregivers.

Among other topics, Tomita is doing research to identify the effects of exercise on the physical and cognitive abilities of frail older adults, who are at risk of losing independence, and to detect and prevent burnout from caregiving through the use of technology.

One of her most used products in the world is the Home Safety Self Assessment Tool (HSSAT), which has been translated into several other languages and is used across the United States and in several other countries.
