Joanna Pepin is a family sociologist.

Her research focuses on issues tied to inequality within couples and families. Areas of interest include the distribution of resources within families — such as who does the housework, who works for pay, and how couples share (or don’t share) earnings and family responsibilities. She also studies how historical forces contribute to gender inequality within families and divergent outcomes among women.

Pepin can speak to media about a wide variety of topics in this field, as well as parents’ participation in the workforce, and policies impacting families, such as childcare and paid family leave.

She can also discuss how the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted families’ lives. She has co-authored papers on some of these impacts, looking at topics including childcare, homeschooling and parents’ employment, and changes in the division of household labor during the pandemic.
