Membership Benefits

Individual

Becoming a member of NeMLA means becoming part of a community of scholars engaged in cutting-edge academic conversation. If that's not enough, here are 10 more benefits of joining the NeMLA family!

As a member of NeMLA:

1. Discount Hotel and Travel Rates for Conference Attendees

Individuals attending the 48th Annual NeMLA Convention in Baltimore, Maryland, from March 23 to 26, 2017, can take advantage of the convention hotel rate at the Baltimore Marriott Waterfront at $179 per night for a standard room. For more information and for the special link to book at the low convention rate, see our hotel information page.

NeMLA 2017 Convention attendees also can take advantage of discount fares and bonus Rapid Reward points with our official airline, Southwest Airlines. For more information and for the special link to book your discounted flight, see our travel information page.

NeMLA also provides travel awards to and from the annual convention for some members, as well as opportunities to share costs for hotels and travel.

2. Free Food and Social Engagement

NeMLA provides a free continental breakfast for the second and third days of the convention. The Women’s and Gender Studies Caucus hosts the Shakespeare’s Sister Breakfast for its mentors, mentees, and caucus members. And we host a free Sunday late-morning Membership Brunch, which allows all members to converse and network. At the Membership Brunch, we also announce the winners of NeMLA Essay Awards, congratulate out-going members of the Board and welcome new members of the Board, and announce the beginning Call for Sessions due before Summer.

3. Explore the Northeast.

NeMLA is a regional convention that attracts scholars from around the world. This convention allows members to see new cities throughout the northeastern United States, with previous conventions held in Baltimore, Boston, Montreal, and Toronto.

4. Presentation Opportunities and Special Events

Each March, members are invited to submit proposals to chair or organize sessions for NeMLA’s annual convention. Once the call for papers is announced in June, members are invited to submit their paper proposals to the appropriate chairs and organizers. These opportunities to present allow you to build community not only in your field but also across disciplines. You have the opportunity of attending special events in the different areas of scholarship showcased and sponsored at NeMLA: invited speakers, fiction and poetry readings, film screenings, music, and more! With attendees from all over the world, NeMLA has a large group of long-time members who like to return again and again to the friendliest regional conference we know.

5. Professionalizing Workshops, Mentorship, and Service

Each year, the Board plans several workshops that focus on professionalization--such as book and article publication, promotion and tenure, writing grant proposals, and negotiating the job market. These sessions typically include several panelists who are at various points in their careers, as well as people in relevant fields (such as acquisitions editors of university presses, journal editors, and grant-writing officers). Brief presentations are followed by a lengthy discussion with attendees, in which NeMLA members are encouraged to bring whatever questions they might have about these issues.

In addition, the Graduate Student Caucus offers CV workshops to NeMLA convention attendees. In these workshops, faculty with search committee experience host one-on-one meetings with attendees seeking employment to discuss CV and job application strategies.

The Women’s and Gender Studies Caucus also operates Shakespeare's Sister, an interdisciplinary mentoring program which pairs senior faculty mentors with junior faculty and doctoral students.

NeMLA members may also volunteer to serve on the board of the organization and become part of the decision-making process while adding to your administrative experience. Nominations for most open positions are due in June, with elections completed by February.

6. Awards and Fellowship Opportunities

NeMLA sponsors several awards and fellowships to promote new scholarship in modern languages, including the yearly Book Award, Summer Research Fellowship, and Travel Awards to our annual convention. Applicants must be members of NeMLA. Additional awards are sponsored by NeMLA’s individual Caucuses to recognize quality research among their constituents who presented at the yearly convention.

7. Subscription to Modern Language Studies

In Summer and Winter, our award-winning journal MLS presents peer-reviewed essays on special topics of current and lasting interest to the profession, book reviews of recent publications, and creative writing. Edited and produced in the Department of English & Creative Writing at Susquehanna University in Selinsgrove, Pennsylvania, MLS is a forum for both emerging and established scholars, and for all the theoretical and critical perspectives that make our organization a richly diverse one. MLS therefore enables conversations begun at NeMLA to continue beyond the convention.

8. Publishing Opportunities

Members of the association are encouraged to submit essays and book reviews to MLS. NeMLA Essay Award winners receive automatic consideration for publication by MLS, subject to the journal’s double-blind review. As well, our Annual Book Award winner receives assistance from NeMLA with contacting presses about publication of their manuscripts, at the winner’s discretion.

9. Book Review Opportunities

Members are encouraged to have their publishers send their books to NeMLA to have them reviewed in MLS. All new books by members will be announced on the NeMLA website. For more information, please email support@nemla.org.

10. Advertising Opportunities

Take advantage of MLS’s broad readership and NeMLA’s large annual convention membership to announce your own book. MLS offers a special advertising rate to members with books completed during the last year or about to appear.

Note: If you would like to become a member but are not planning to attend the annual convention, please contact Administrative Support (support@nemla.org) for a special link.
