To: All UB Employees
From: Nancy J. Smyth, Dean of the School of Social
Work, and Chair of the School of Public Health and Health
Professions Dean Search Committee
The search for the next dean of the School of Public Health and
Health Professions has progressed very well. Just before the end of
the fall semester, the search committee completed its review of a
highly qualified and diverse initial group of candidates. From that
pool, the committee selected a subset of the strongest candidates
for confidential off-site interviews which were completed January 6
and 7. The search committee was impressed by the extraordinary
quality of the candidates’ academic, professional and
leadership experiences, and has recommended a group of finalists to
advance for campus visits.
The next phase of the search involves more extensive on-campus
visits that will include meetings with faculty, senior academic and
administrative leadership, staff, students, alumni and the extended
campus community. Our search firm is in conversation with invited
finalists, whose visits will be scheduled during the period of
January 26 through February 5. Additional detail about the campus
visit schedules, as well as the names and CVs for each finalist
will be available online at the search website before the close of
business on Thursday, January 22.
Invitation to public forums
Campus visits will include a public forum at which the
candidates will offer an opening statement of their vision for
UB’s School of Public Health and Health Professions as well
as their interest in and qualifications for the dean’s
position. Following the opening statement, there will be time for
questions, answers and conversation with the meeting participants.
We strongly encourage members of the campus community to attend
these sessions to learn more about the finalists and to engage in
conversation with them about the future of UB. Your participation
also assists our efforts to recruit the very best new dean by
demonstrating that the UB community is genuinely invested in the
search for its academic leadership.
Search committees seeks campus input
Following each campus visit, the search committee invites input
from the campus community. Directions on how to submit feedback
will be provided on the search website and in subsequent email
communications from me.
The search committee will convene quickly after the on-campus
visits to prepare its summary report for UB’s senior
leadership who will make the final decision on the appointment of
the new dean. Campus input will be an important component of the
search committee report.
I will send another campus wide communication to alert you when
the finalist names, CVs, and schedules are posted online.
Meanwhile, thank you for your interest and participation in the
search for the new dean of UB’s School of Public Health and
Health Professions. Additional information about the search is
always available on
the search website.
With best regards,
Nancy J. Smyth, Dean of the School of Social Work, and Chair of
