Dear University Colleagues,

It is a pleasure to share that the search for the university’s next assistant vice president for alumni engagement is now underway. Vice President for University Life and Services Dennis Black has agreed to serve as chair of the search committee.

As you know, Larry Zielinski has been serving as acting executive director of alumni engagement since February of 2014. This search (and ultimate hire) are critical to our ability to continue the growth and further expansion of the university’s alumni engagement efforts started during Larry’s term.

This leadership position is critical – now, perhaps more than ever before – as the university counts on alumni to advance key strategic priorities and to be active partners in making UB as vibrant and successful as possible. The new assistant vice president for alumni engagement will be the university’s lead officer on efforts to mobilize our over 240,000 alumni around the world on behalf of and in support of UB. With that in mind, a diverse and thoughtful search committee, including numerous UB alumni and a future alumna, has been assembled to assist with this important recruitment effort. Members of the search committee include:

  • Gabrielle Cohen, student representative, Environmental Design major
  • Jonathan Dandes, BS ’74, Member, UB Council, and Past President, UB Alumni Association Board of Directors; President, Rich Baseball Operations
  • Stephen C. Dunnett, BA ‘68 & Ph.D. ’77, Professor and Vice Provost for International Education
  • Ilene Fleischmann, Vice Dean for Alumni, Public Relations and Communications, Law School
  • Carol Gloff, BS ’75, Immediate Past President, UB Alumni Association Board of Directors; President, Carol Gloff & Associates
  • Mary Garlick Roll, BS ‘84 & MS ‘88, President of the UB Alumni Association; Medical Science Liaison and National Director of Nursing Initiatives, Heron Therapeutics
  • Cynthia M. Shore, BS ’81 & MBA ’83, Senior Assistant Dean and Director of External Relations, School of Management

The services of Jill Lasman, senior vice president, Lois L. Lindauer Searches, have been secured to assist the search committee. Jill, a known and well-respected national development search executive, has completed over 150 searches for leading education, healthcare, arts and social services institutions during her LLLS tenure, and has assisted the Division of Philanthropy and Alumni Engagement in multiple searches. The search committee and search firm will be involved in recruitment activities through the fall. We expect on-campus visits by finalists for the position before Thanksgiving, and hope to have the new next assistant vice president named before the close of the calendar year.

Finding the right person to fill this position at UB is no small challenge. In addition to the work that will be taken up by the committee, we will look to the entire university community for feedback throughout the search process. I encourage you to visit the search website for this position for updates and position detail, to share input and nominate potential candidates.

I thank you for your interest and support of this endeavor. If you have any questions or concerns, please be in touch with Dennis and me. We welcome your input.

Sincerely,

Nancy L. Wells
