Key Qualities for Success

The incumbent must be results-oriented with personal characteristics that include: the ability to wield informal influence over a diverse group of external and internal constituencies; a commitment to confidentiality, inclusiveness and diversity, diplomacy, flexibility; a sense of humor; team-orientation; creativity; ability to communicate complex ideas clearly and succinctly to a wide variety of audiences; and sensitivity to the stewardship of long-term relationships. The incumbent also must be able to articulate the mission and goals of a public institution of higher education. The incumbent must be able to travel up to 50% of the time, including evenings and occasional weekends. 


  • Bachelor's degree with more than seven years of direct experience in senior leadership roles to include management positions of progressive responsibility required. Master’s degree and experience in higher education and alumni engagement preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to accurately forecast and develop both short-term and long-term goals; ability to develop, manage and achieve comprehensive goals.
  • Superior skills in building key relationships with alumni and external constituents/partners. The ability to work collaboratively and strategically with colleagues across department lines is essential.
  • Ability to effectively communicate objectives, energize and inspire staff to achieve results and meet goals while creating a culture of collaboration and value across organizational units.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and customer service orientation. Poised, professional manner with the ability to express oneself clearly and empathetically in interactions with others in all forms of communications, verbal and written, one-on-one and group, etc. Ability to communicate in a direct and professional manner that engages dialog in a manner that resolves differences.
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain confidences, protect confidential information, and model ethical values.
