Dear University Community:

Dear University Community:

Over the last several months, our university community has been engaged in very fruitful campus-wide discussions about our institutional priorities and our best strategies for realizing our ambitious UB 2020 vision: to be recognized as one of our nation’s most distinctive and most relevant research universities.

As we focus collectively on taking our UB 2020 vision to the next level, we have been working together to sharpen the strategies we employ to capture our distinctive strengths and align them for maximum impact.

As part of this process, the university’s senior leadership has concluded that our institutional vision will be well served by the addition of dedicated vice presidential leadership in two key areas of responsibility.  In the coming weeks, we will launch a search for the position of Vice President for Communications and will begin a search for a permanent Chief Information Officer, who will also hold the title of Vice President.  Previously, the university’s institutional communications enterprise has been housed in other administrative units; the leadership position of Chief Information Officer has been filled for several years in an interim capacity.

Formal job descriptions are being developed for each position and will be available on the leadership search website once these searches are officially underway.  Briefly:

  • The Vice President for Communications will oversee the University Communications enterprise, telling UB’s story effectively to its many audiences inside and outside the university and giving the university a competitive edge in continuing to recruit outstanding faculty, staff, and students to our community. The Vice President will be responsible, in part, for deploying the university’s overarching communications strategy in support of institutional goals; ensuring collaboration among communications professionals and teams across the university; and building and guarding UB’s institutional brand.
  • The Vice President and Chief Information Officer will provide forward-looking vision, leadership, and long-range direction for the delivery of a robust and innovative information technology infrastructure to advance the university’s research and educational missions.  Leveraging technology and digital resources to position UB at the forefront of the 21 century higher education IT and computing landscape, the Vice President and CIO provides critical oversight of information technology, computing services, and administrative information systems across the university.

In the next two weeks, I will formally establish two search committees to launch these two national searches. I am pleased to note that Laura Hubbard, Vice President for Finance and Administration will chair the Vice President for Communications search committee and Dr. Liesl Folks, Dean of the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, will chair the Vice President and Chief Information Officer search committee.  It is my hope to have both positions in place before the beginning of the Fall 2013 semester.

I look forward to the contributions that each of these executive positions will bring to our campus community as we continue to work together to build upon our strengths so we may lead with even greater impact.  And I look forward to our collaborative efforts to pursue our ambitious vision of excellence for the university.  Thank you, as always, for all that you contribute to our university’s progress on a daily basis.
