UB is a premier, research-intensive public university. A member of the Association of American Universities, UB is a flagship campus and is the largest and most comprehensive university within the 64-campus State University of New York (SUNY) system. The premier center for graduate and professional education among SUNY campuses, UB enrolls more than 30,000 students. The president is committed to UB’s success in intercollegiate athletics at the NCAA Division I level. The University at Buffalo offers 16 Division I intercollegiate sports that compete at the highest level of competition in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA): football, softball, women's volleyball, men's and women's basketball, wrestling, women's swimming and diving, men's and women's tennis, men's and women's cross country, women's soccer, and men's and women's indoor and outdoor track and field. The University at Buffalo competes in the prestigious Mid-American Conference in all sports.

Position Summary

The Director of Athletics has overall responsibility for the Division of Athletics comprising all athletic, recreation and intramural programs, and basic (non-degree) physical education instruction, including the administration of UB’s Division I intercollegiate athletics program, with a commitment to student athlete excellence in the classroom and on the playing field; the welfare of student athletes; clear compliance with all NCAA, conference and university policies; and fiscal integrity and responsibility. 

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Hire, develop, and organize a highly competent and energetic staff within a collective bargaining environment.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity and an inclusive environment within the entire Division.
  • Foster an environment where student-athletes excel on the field and in the classroom.
  • Strongly support and assure compliance with any and all NCAA, Mid-American Conference and University at Buffalo policies, rules, regulations, and operational procedures.
  • Conceptualize and articulate a vision for UB athletics and oversee the development and implementation of a strategic plan to achieve that vision.
  • Foster collaborative and productive partnerships with a broad range of constituencies, both within and outside the institution.
  • Provide leadership in the area of major gifts solicitation for facilities and endowments to support UB’s athletics program.
  • Provide oversight to the Division’s finances and budget process with particular attention to revenue generation and to ensure that strong operational support is in place to maintain proper controls on spending.
  • Develop and oversee implementation of an effective marketing and public relations strategy to build and enhance the athletics program. This includes personal, electronic and print communications and multi-media platforms with the athletics staff, UB leadership, media and the community.
  • Perform effectively and with integrity as a member of the University’s senior leadership team, as well as a representative of the Division of Athletics and University.
  • Establish an expectation of competitive success among all head and assistant coaches, student-athletes and support staff in the UB program.


  • A compelling record of achievements and contributions to the advancement of recognized excellence in NCAA Division I athletics program(s) similar to the University at Buffalo, with evidence of meaningful work experience with outstanding leaders in the profession.
  • Excellent administrative and financial skills; a minimum of ten years of progressive experience leading a successful, multifaceted enterprise, preferably in intercollegiate athletics or related field.
  • Thorough knowledge of NCAA and conference regulations, requirements and reporting systems is necessary.
  • Demonstrated fund-raising, brand marketing, public relations and media experience.
  • Strong communication skills, with demonstrated record of being a leader and spokesperson for a large organization, both internally and externally.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, business acumen and creativity required to generate revenue and allocate and manage resources effectively to achieve results.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity and gender equity.


Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree preferred
