MSW Veteran and Military Family Focus

The Veteran and Military Family (VMF) curriculum Focus (previously known as the Specialization) provides an opportunity for UB social work students interested in working with veterans and/or military family members to receive education and training to better serve this population.

Overview of MSW VMF Focus

  • The Focus provides hands-on, practice-oriented coursework and fieldwork that will give MSW students the knowledge and skills they need to succeed at UB and beyond.
  • Students in the Focus will be equipped to make a positive impact on veterans and military families.

VMF Focus Requirements

  • Course: SW720 Introduction to Issues in Veteran and Military Family Care; taken in the foundation year (3 credits).
  • Field Placement(s): Required in the advanced year; an additional VMF foundation year placement is optional. Minimum of 6 credits.
  • Inter-Professional Seminar: Four meetings (two each semester) over the course of the advanced year field placement. No credits.
  • Portfolio of VMF-Relevant Assignments: Additional graded assignments from 3 or more courses with veterans and/or military families as the target population. The majority of assignments are from the Advanced year.
