A Culture of Safety

UB is committed to providing all members of its campus community with a safe, friendly and welcoming environment to live, learn, work and visit.

We are a diverse, multicultural institution that welcomes and celebrates the people who live, work and study at our campuses. Our largest campus is located in Amherst, N.Y., which is ranked among the safest cities in the country.

A safe campus environment

Protecting students, faculty and staff is a top university priority. We have invested millions of dollars in our safety and security measures, including UB Alert, our state-of-the-art emergency notification system, as well as a network of emergency telephones, security cameras and enhanced outdoor lighting.

Our UB Alert system quickly communicates urgent information through text messaging or email to everyone in our campus community.

Campus Safety Escorts offer walking services that are available to and from any campus location. The Safety Shuttle, available on the South Campus, picks up passengers in 20-minute intervals and will transport you within a 1.5-mile radius of the South Campus, as well as to Campus Manor and Kensington Village (nearby apartment complexes where many UB students live).

University Police

The nationally recognized University Police department patrols our campus 24 hours a day and is the first to respond to all medical, fire and criminal emergencies on campus.

The University Police Department is dedicated to educating students, faculty and staff about protecting the well-being and property of everyone on campus. University Police officers give presentations on crime prevention at international student orientations.

A diverse, tolerant community

UB is proud to be among the most internationalized universities in the country and offers many programs designed to help celebrate that diversity. Service events and mentoring programs help our students build relationships and become leaders, and that work often begins in Western New York.

Our inclusive environment is home to students from more than 115 countries, representing a diversity of gender, race, ethnicity, age, religion, sexual orientation, values and perspectives.

The university recognizes this diversity as one of our many assets and strives to create a climate that raises awareness, knowledge and respect within UB and in the surrounding community.

There are hundreds of reasons to choose UB. Here are 10 of the best.
