Objectives for the Presidential Investiture Ceremony and Related Inaugural Events

Primary Objectives

• To reinforce the centrality of UB's academic mission and its relevance to society today

• To affirm and enhance UB's role and place in higher education at the state, national and international levels

• To provide a forum for addressing issues of relevance and significance to the academy

• To provide the President with a forum for setting UB's directions

All Experience Is an Arch to Build Upon: Building Buffalo's University

Prof. William R. Greiner, President Emeritus of the University at Buffalo, discusses the history of the University at Buffalo, which is almost as old as the city. Established in 1846 and headed by Millard Fillmore, UB has been an essential institution, a symbol of civic pride, and a testament to Buffalo's urbanity. In the 1960s, the university became a public institution, part of the State University of New York, which positively and negatively affected civic opinion. The university was accused of harboring radicals and, in expanding the campus into Amherst, charged with having abandoned the city in its time of need. Today, UB plays a major role in the recovery of the region's economy: UB's total economic impact on WNY in the past year was more than $1.25 billion. Learn first-hand about the decision to place the university in Amherst and learn about some of the academic programs that make UB a world-class university and its emerging role as an engine for economic development.  | Details
