The National Academy of Construction (NAC) recognized Dan D’Angelo (BS ’83) for his “significant contributions to the effectiveness of the engineering and construction industry.”

Over the course of his career, D’Angelo worked on high-impact projects for a variety of public and private organizations. The NAC acknowledged D’Angelo’s professional portfolio, community service and professional committees as part of his induction into the academy.

After graduating from UB in 1983, D’Angelo began his career with the New York State Department of Transportation (NYS DOT), where managed different aspects of several projects, including the Tappan Zee Bridge (the New New York Bridge). He also served in a number of leadership roles with the NYS DOT. During his 34-year career, D’Angelo served as regional design engineer for Region 5 (Buffalo, NY), statewide director for the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, director and deputy chief engineer in the office of design, and several other positions.

D’Angelo is also involved in a number of academic, research and professional boards. He is a member of the advisory boards for UB’s Department of Civil, Structural and Environmental Engineering and the Institute of Bridge Engineering.

In addition to the support D’Angelo provides to academic organizations, he was also the chair and vice chair for the National Academies of Science’s Strategic Highway Research Program 2 (SHRP2). D’Angelo led the effort to plan for developing high-speed, nondestructive testing procedures for design evaluation and construction inspection. He also guided and SHRP2 expert task group through the risk management process on rapid renewal contracts.

D’Angelo also serves on several research panels and committees for the Transportation Research Board, a program unit of the National Academy of Sciences that provides innovative, research-based solutions to improve transportation.

According to the organization’s website, “a person is qualified for membership in the NAC if he or she: has made significant contributions to the effectiveness of the engineering and construction industry over a period of several years.”

Currently, D’Angelo is a principal civil engineer with Applied Research Associates, Inc. where he provides consulting services to the transportation infrastructure industry on risk management, project management, innovation deployment and technical training.
