The Stephen Still Institute of Sustainable Transportation and Logistics (Stephen Still ISTL) has participated in the annual meeting every year since 2015, and this is the second year of participation for UB’s Institute of Bridge Engineering (IBE).

The meeting is a four-day event that begins on Sunday, January 7 and ends on Wednesday, January 10. The annual TRB event is an opportunity for transportation researchers around the world to participate in technical sessions, and experience research presentations by transportation students and other investigators. The Stephen Still ISTL, IBE and TransInfo, a consortium of tier 1 research universities, will host the 2018 University at Buffalo Transportation Reception on Monday, January 8.

Students and faculty members from the UB Department of Civil, Structural and Environmental Engineering (CSEE) will have a strong presence at the TRB Annual Meeting. These researchers also represent the Stephen Still ISTL and the IBE.

Assistant professor and IBE researcher Ravi Ranade, and his students Alok Deshpande, Dhanedra Kumar and Hamidreza Rakhri will present posters on behalf of the IBE covering various aspects of concrete in bridges. Their research focuses on the resiliency of concrete, how temperature effects it, and how to improve corrosion resistance.

Anthony Tessari, a geotechnical faculty member and IBE researcher will attend the meeting, and his student Joseph Colletti will have a poster up for the event. The research depicted in the poster is a collaboration between Colletti, Tessari, and two CSEE faculty member, Andrew Whittaker and Mettupalayam Sivaselvan. Their research highlights the capabilities of UB’s Laminar Box, a tool used to simulates free ground response under simulated seismic excitations of soil interactions. The project by Colletti, Tessari, Sivaselvan and Whittaker examines large-scale hybrid simulation of soil-foundation-structure-interaction. Asssitant professor Teng Wu and his student Jianming Hao have prepared a poster for the event titled Stimulation of Non-Synoptic Wind-Induced Transient Effects on Long-Span Bridge Aerodynamics. Wu and Hao's work also represents IBE.

The Stephen Still ISTL director, and CSEE associate professor Panagiotis Ch. Anastasopoulos, will lecture on the research advances in statistical and econometric methods, and present a paper with co-authors titled Analysis of accident injury-severities using a time-variant correlated random parameters order probit approach.

Qing He, another CSEE faculty member and Stephen Still Assistant Professor, will present six research papers with co-authors. His topics address different ways to improve traffic; some of them include: using social media data to detect accidents and online traffic signal coordination with a game theoretic approach.

Adel Sadek, CSEE professor and associate and founding director of the Stephen Still ISTL will also attend and participate in different capacities.

Overall, 16 total UB School of Engineering and Applied Sciences faculty members and students will attend the meeting.
