A big welcome to home ownership along the South Campus

The University at Buffalo has developed the Home Loan Guaranty program to encourage home ownership in the South Campus community, a residential area in the City of Buffalo and home to many UB employees for over 80 years. The University at Buffalo has an essential interest in helping to maintain a strong, vibrant residential community and the Home Loan Guaranty Program is one of the ways the University contributes to the vitality and quality of life in the South Campus community.

“It’s a diverse neighborhood. We’ve got college students, some older homeowners, and some young families with kids. When I go to work, I see the kids standing on the street corner waiting for the school bus. That’s what a neighborhood means to me, “ says David Benders, program director at WBFO, UB’s National Public Radio affiliate, and one of the program’s first home-buyers.

Highlights of the South Campus community include a network of block clubs and community associations, quality housing stock, variety of public and private schools, and parks and other public recreational places.  A variety of ethnic and cultural restaurants, retail districts, entertainment venues, as well as the Gloria J. Parks Community Center and the Veterans Association Western New York Healthcare System Hospital are home in the South Campus community.  Originally built by the Country Club of Buffalo in 1901, the Grover Cleveland public golf course borders the east side of the University at Buffalo South Campus, and the newly renovated McCarthy Park features 32 acres of walking and biking paths in addition to recreation fields and facilities.

Major bus lines, two transit stations - LaSalle and South Campus, the latter being the terminus for the NFTA rapid transit and major connection to suburban bus routes - serve the South Campus community residents.  Of cultural interest in the South Campus community is the University at Buffalo Anderson Gallery, home to the University’s permanent art collection and academic and artistic exhibitions.

Michael J. Pietkiewicz, Assistant Vice President for Government Relations in the Office of External Affairs, was the first UB employee to purchase a home through the program.

“We found a safe and walkable community that embraces diversity and is replete with beautiful, well-built homes, pocket parks and tree-lined streets,” Pietkiewicz says.
