Neighborhood Highlights
The South Campus community comprises a rich fabric of neighborhood culture and distinctive character, where you will find:
Treasured Housing
Program participants can choose from an array of houses, most of which were built in the 1920s and 1930s and feature hardwood flooring, stained glass windows, fireplaces, and other exciting attributes.
Rolling lawns, ample yard space, and tree-lined streets add character and warmth to this historic neighborhood. Both single and two-family homes are eligible for this program.
A Walkable Community
Safe, convenient, and tight-knit are ways to describe the South Campus community where you’re provided an urban experience with suburban safety. Numerous amenities are within walking distance including the Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority Metro Rail and bus lines, grocery stores, restaurants, family-owned businesses, and retail outlets.
Bordering Tonawanda, Amherst, and Cheektowaga, the South Campus community has historically low crime rates and boasts a great collection of cultural experiences including public parks, artistic and entertainment venues, and recreational facilities.
Entertainment and Recreation
Residents of all walks of life find the community to be full of cultural and recreational opportunities. The Grover Cleveland Public golf course, home of the 1912 U.S. Open, is within walking distance across from campus, as is the UB Anderson Art Gallery, home to the University’s permanent art collection and host to art educational programs.
Athletic leagues, exercise programs, and dance classes are offered at the Gloria J. Parks Community Center on Main Street for children through adults. Clark Gym on the UB campus also offers recreation opportunities for the community, including swimming, weight training and athletic courts. The newly renovated McCarthy Park features 32 acres of walking and biking paths in addition to recreation fields and facilities.
Educational Opportunities and Family Services
The South Campus Community offers award-winning educational opportunities and family services for residents.
Across from campus are the Veterans Association Western New York Healthcare System Hospital and the Gloria J. Parks Community Center, which offers numerous amenities for community members. UB has a child care center on the South Campus and a partnership with Head Start.
Recognized as one of the top ten schools in Erie County by Business First, Westminster Community Charter School meets New York State’s criteria as a “high performing/gap closing” school, has won awards for student improvement, and has very low disciplinary problems and high parental involvement.
Highgate Heights Elementary became the first mandatory uniform school in the Buffalo Public School District. This school meets its state targets in test performance each year and is one of the few elementary schools to offer advanced Biology and Algebra courses for eight graders. Highgate Heights just completed a $15 million dollar renovation and is defined by its loyal community involvement and student achievement.
Bennett High School’s All High Stadium recently underwent a historic $6.5 million renovation with both new track and turf surfaces, lighting, and seating for school events.
