Education:

  • PhD, English, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 1999

Professional experience:

  • Professor, English, University at Buffalo

What mentoring means to me:

I think of mentoring as a form of demystification. People and issues in academia can be intimidating when one is a graduate student and a mentor is the person who makes things more palatable, people more personable and approachable, and the institution more navigable.

Topics I am willing to discuss with students:

Academic Culture

  • Dealing with politics and conflict with faculty or peers.

Personal Experiences

  • Experiences related to being a woman.
  • Experiences related to class and/or socioeconomic status.
  • Experiences related to mental health and/or abilities.
  • Experiences related to physical health and/or abilities.
  • Experiences related to racial, ethnic, cultural and/or religious minority status.
  • Experiences related to sexual and/or gender minority status.
