Dean of the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences
Search Announcement
November 22, 2005
Dear Colleagues,
Provost Tripathi has initiated a search for the new Dean of the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS) and has invited me to serve as chair of the committee. With pleasure, I have accepted Provost Tripathi’s invitation.
The purpose of my letter to the university community is twofold: i) to provide an introduction to the search process; and ii) to request your assistance in identifying excellent candidates for the position of Dean of the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences.
To facilitate a successful outcome to our search, we have secured the services of Dr. Ilene Nagel of Russell Reynolds Associates. Dr. Nagel is a former Professor of Law at Indiana University. She has also served in university leadership positions, most recently as the Executive Vice Chancellor (chief academic officer) at the University of California, Santa
Barbara; and as the Dean of the Graduate School and the Associate Provost for Research at the University of Maryland, College Park. Her knowledge of academia has made her a very successful recruiter and the University at
Buffalo has called upon her expertise in the past with great success. Dr. Nagel is very familiar with the University at Buffalo, having assisted with our provostal and vice presidential searches. I have every confidence that she will help us to attract an excellent candidate.
It should be emphasized that, put simply, the goal of the search committee is to identify an outstanding researcher with demonstrated excellence in administration to lead the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences.
Therefore, we welcome input from the UB community as the search process continues. We will be meeting with various constituents that have been working with or within the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences over
the next few weeks to understand what the community believes are the essential qualities of a new Dean. If we do not have the opportunity to meet in a personal meeting, and you would like to provide your thoughts and suggestions regarding the search process, please do not hesitate to contact me via email at Engineering-Dean@vpsa.buffalo.edu. I invite you to contact me at any time with questions. We have also developed a website to keep the university community updated regarding the search process (please see: http://www.buffalo.edu/engineering-dean).
More importantly, we would like your help in identifying excellent candidates. Therefore, please feel free to send your nominations to Dr. Ilene Nagel at ubeng-dean@russellreynolds.com. Each nominated candidate
will be contacted and requested to submit their CV for consideration. Although all candidate identities will be confidential until the time of final campus interviews, we plan to conduct an open process.
I will be in contact with you in the future to provide further information as the search proceeds. I thank you for your interest and support of this important process.
Sincerely,
Alexander Cartwright
Chair, Search Committee, Dean of the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences
