The 14th Dalai Lama Calls UB Students to Promote Peace

For most UB students, the visit of His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama to UB (September 19, 2006, 1 p.m.) will be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to learn about this Nobel Peace Prize winning advocate for world peace, religious tolerance, and cultural understanding. His message is simple: a future of peace, human compassion and cultural freedom is possible, and it is in the hands of today’s students.

Prepare for the visit by His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama.

Especially for students, UB is:

  1. Free tickets for UB students

    Distributing 13,000 free UB student tickets and giving away limited-edition posters to the first 4,000 students who pick up their tickets. | Details

  2. Vajra Sky Over Tibet

    Showing the documentary, “Vajra Sky Over Tibet,” free to UB students. | Details

    This film is a mesmerizing view of the plight of the Tibetan people directed by UB alumnus John Bush. The showing is open only to UB students, faculty and staff, and will be preceded by comments from the director. Free popcorn!

  3. Freedom in Exile

    Giving freshmen the Dalai Lama autobiography, “Freedom in Exile,” free as this fall’s UB Reads selection during orientation.

  4. A chance to ask questions

    Giving UB students an exclusive chance to ask questions of the Dalai Lama for his response during his lecture. | Details

    All students whose questions are accepted will win a prize.

  5. Programs of interest to UB students

    Holding MANY programs of interest to UB students. | Details

    Creating 5,000 peace flags to hang on campus to welcome the Dalai Lama. | Details

About His Holiness the Dalai Lama

At 15 the Dalai Lama was the head of state, leading Tibet during threat of a full scale war with China.

“What was I at 15?”
At 20, he was meeting Chinese leaders Mao Tse-tung, Chou En-Lai and Deng Xiaoping to discuss the political fate of Tibet.

The Dalai Lama accepts the Nobel Peace Prize

“What am I now?”
By 30, he was driven into exile in India, followed by 80,,000 Tibetan refugees.

“What will I be at 30?”
By 54, his efforts to liberate Tibet while consistently opposing the use of violence earned him the Nobel Peace Prize in 1989.
