Parking and Directions
On Sept. 19, 2006, when His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama visits UB, we expect to host up to 30,000 people in UB Stadium. Because of the unprecedented volume of traffic anticipated for this event, parking regulations will be strictly enforced. Here are some general tips for the Sept. 19 program:
Parking Tips
Will certain parking lots be “off-line” (unavailable for general use) for Sept. 19?
What parking tags will be required to park on North Campus on Sept. 19?
How will the Sept. 19 Dalai Lama event affect normal campus business?
I have guests coming to the event who will not be traveling with me. Where should they park?
If I’m in a satellite lot, how will I know how to get back to that lot after the event?
I am staying at a local hotel. Will they have transportation?
How can I get an up-to-the-minute update on traffic conditions on campus?
If I am attending the event, when should I arrive at UB? When should I leave campus?
How many shuttle buses will be running? Will there be a charge to ride these buses?
What about the NFTA Metro buses? Will they make their usual stops at Flint Loop?
-
When should we arrive?
Arrive early to guarantee a convenient parking space.
Faculty, staff, and students will be able to park near their work-site until 9:30 a.m. (excluding the “off-line” lots noted below).
-
Will certain parking lots be “off-line” (unavailable for general use) for Sept. 19?
The following lots will be “off-line” for Sept. 19: Lake LaSalle, Arena, Alumni, Stadium, Slee, Baird, and Special Event lots. Individuals that typically park in these lots will be sent to other lots by University Police and parking and transportation aides.

All vehicles entering the North Campus must display a faculty/staff/student hangtag or a red Dalai Lama hangtag from their rearview mirror.

Departments should limit or eliminate the need to move about campus on Sept. 19. Schedule accordingly.
You may wish to bring a lunch to campus to avoid traffic delays.
Access to campus will be very limited. Purchasing will be advising vendors to plan deliveries around Sept. 19.
-
I have guests coming to the event who will not be traveling with me. Where should they park?
Parking and transportation will be restricted on the North Campus on Sept. 19. If you do not already have a faculty/staff or student hangtag, or a red Dalai Lama hangtag, your vehicle will NOT be permitted on the UB North Campus, on this day. -
When should we arrive at or depart from work?
Plan early arrival and departure times from work. Parking will be controlled after 9:30 a.m. His Holiness addresses the public in UB Stadium at 3:00 p.m. At approximately 4:30 p.m., egress from campus will be significantly delayed.

A convenient drop-off/pick-up location for the Sept. 19 Dalai Lama event has been established on the North Campus at the Center for Tomorrow lot. Shuttles will be available at this location.
-

Check with your hotel. If they have a shuttle to the event, they will drop off and pick up at the Rensch Loop.

Tune in to 1620-AM within a four-mile radius of the North Campus for parking and traffic updates.
-
If I am attending the event, when should I arrive at UB? When should I leave campus?
We strongly advise everyone to arrive as early as possible to enjoy the full schedule of events on Sept. 19. Programs begin as early as 8 a.m. For a complete list of events, visit www.buffalo.edu/dalai_lama/events.html.
Formal programming begins at UB Stadium at 1 p.m. Everyone must be seated by 2:30 p.m.
His Holiness takes the main stage at 3 p.m. We expect his address to last until 4:30 p.m. or 5 p.m. Once the program ends, expect delays leaving campus. Stay on campus for additional program offerings. Plan accordingly and be patient.
-
What happens if people don’t have hangtags?
On Sept. 19, the only cars that will be allowed on UB’s North Campus are those with regular UB parking hangtags (faculty, staff, students) and those with special red Dalai Lama hangtags.
University Police and Amherst Police will be stationed at and near all campus entrances redirecting people without hangtags.
-
How do I know where to park?
Faculty/Staff: Faculty and staff who arrive before 9:30 a.m. should be able to park near their work-site. We strongly advise limiting or eliminating your need to move about campus, and especially moving your vehicle, on Sept. 19. This will be an unusually busy traffic day. Please schedule accordingly and car pool if possible. Shuttle buses and the UB Stampede will be in operation.
Students: Any student with a valid UB parking hangtag may park on the North Campus except in lots that are “off-line” for the day (see above), or board the UB Stampede from South Campus. We advise arriving on campus as early as possible on Sept. 19 (even as early as 9 a.m.) to have access to the best parking and to enjoy the full day of events. The normal inter-campus UB Stampede and intra-campus shuttles will be running for UB faculty, staff, and student use only.
General Public: When you purchased your tickets for the Dalai Lama lecture, you were prompted to make parking or transit arrangements. If you have not done so, visit www.ubevents.org/event/parking.
Handicapped Parking: Individuals with valid handicapped parking permits may park at the UB Stadium lot.
-
How many shuttle buses will be running? Will there be a charge to ride these buses?
Currently, seventy-four buses are scheduled to assist with our transit efforts. Satellite sites and buses will be color-coded and bus aides with color-coded flags will lead individuals to and from the events. A shuttle pass is required. You must arrange for parking and transit offerings in advance. Please visit this Web site to make parking arrangements: www.ubevents.org/event/parking.
-
What about the NFTA Metro buses? Will they make their usual stops at Flint Loop?
Yes. NFTA Metro buses will be allowed to make their usual stops on both campuses. We are working with the NFTA to advise them of the anticipated delays.
-
What about the UB Stampede (inter-campus bus)? Will regular student buses be running? If so, can anyone just hop on one of these buses to get to North Campus?
The UB Stampede service will provide transportation between UB campuses (including residence halls and apartments), and UB’s color-coded shuttles will provide intra-campus transportation to UB students, faculty, and staff only. Signage and aides at the Main Circle bus stop will direct students to the UB Stampede and the general public to transportation for the Dalai Lama events.
-
What about the interfaith service on Sept. 18?
We expect approximately 6,500 people (3,000 of whom are expected to be from the UB community) to attend the interfaith service on Sept. 18 at Alumni Arena. For guests and the general public, there will be limited parking reserved on the North Campus and other parking available at the Pepsi Center. We strongly encourage car pooling for this and all Dalai Lama events!
