There is strong evidence that persons living with chronic psychiatric disorders have a shorter life span and suffer more severely from modifiable risk factors when compared to the general population. One study found that standardized mortality rates from all causes of death for adults with serious mental illness (SMI) were 3.2 times greater than the general population, and results from a 16-state study suggest that people with SMI die on average 25 years earlier than the general population. Data measures collected on the Center for Mental Health Services (CMHS) National Outcome Measures (NOMs), Quarterly Reports, and EHR data are submitted and evaluated on a quarterly basis, and this data is used to drive performance improvement and goal setting.
