According to NIH guidelines, all researchers who submit an application, proposal or report to the NIH must include the PMC reference number (PMCID) when citing applicable papers that they author or that arise from their NIH-funded research.

In an effort to ensure that individuals are being compliant and proactive in obtaining the PMCID numbers, the Clinical and Translational Science Award (CTSA) offered a workshop to discuss exactly how to link a publication to an NIH grant.

Twenty-seven principal investigators and research assistants attended a half-day workshop in August on using the My NCBI My Bibliography tool developed by the National Center for Biotechnology Information. Timothy Schailey, MS, Director of the Office of Research Administration at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, and Erin Bailey, MSM, CRA, Chief Financial Officer of UB’s Clinical and Translational Science Award (CTSA), co-presented a talk titled “NIH Public Access Policy: Accelerating the Delivery of Tomorrow's Advancements.” Three representatives from UB Libraries were on hand to answer questions during the presentation:

Diane Rein, PhD
Liaison, Bioinformatics & Molecular Biology Resources Librarian

Amy Lyons
Interim Director, University Libraries

Nell Aronoff
Senior Assistant Librarian

Future workshops will provide hands-on training in addition to answers to specific questions from the audience.

It was the first in a series of workshops related to My NCBI. All of the workshops are being conducted at the Clinical and Translational Research Center (CTRC).

The event was organized by CTSA Chief Financial Officer Erin Bailey to help bring all CTSA publications into compliance with NIH guidelines.

This workshop was supported by the National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences of the National Institutes of Health under award number UL1TR001412. The content is solely the responsibility of the authors and does not necessarily represent the official views of the NIH.
