A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Jan. 3 for Gerald J. Miller, longtime faculty member in the School of Social Work, who died Nov. 28.

After serving as a combat Mustang P-51 fighter pilot during World War II, Miller earned a BS in biology from Hartwick College and an MS in biology from the University of Rochester. He worked as a research associate in the atomic energy project at the University of Rochester Medical Center until, inspired by a friend who was a graduate of the UB’s MSW program, he decided to change careers.

He earned an MSW from St. Patrick’s College, University of Ottawa, and joined the UB Social Work faculty in 1961. He retired in 1994 as an associate professor emeritus.

Miller established a scholarship fund, the Paul Edwards and Gerald Miller Scholarship Fund, for students attending the UB School of Social Work. Edwards, a deceased School of Social Work faculty member, was a colleague of Miller’s for more than 20 years.

In addition to his UB activities, Miller was a member of the National Board of the Eighth Air Force Historical Society, a member of the Aero Club of Western New York, a Boy Scout and a Boy Scout leader and a friend to the Sisters of Social Service.

The funeral mass will take place at 9:30 a.m. Jan. 3 in Christ the King Church, 30 Lamarck Drive, Snyder.
